Museum Assistants required at Fairfield Shipbuilding Heritage Centre to help visitors enjoy the story of Glasgow's greatest shipyard.

Fairfield Heritage is looking for friendly, enthusiastic volunteers at our heritage centre, to help our visitors from all over the world enjoy the fascinating story of Glasgow’s shipbuilding history. You don't require any previous knowledge of Clyde shipbuilding, or previous museum experience - all the relevant information is included in our fun, volunteer training package.

Fairfield Heritage Centre tells the story of Glasgow’s greatest shipyard through exhibits and displays including 3D presentations, a beautiful collection of ship models, and shipyard memorabilia from cloth bunnets and bowler hats, to ship-builders tools. We provide tours and talks for adults as well as fun engineering/ ocean themed activities for children. Additionally, the visitor centre often hosts talks, performances and art exhibitions. The Fairfield Heritage Centre is free for all visitors, with a focus on community engagement and social inclusion. We strive to ensure the visitor centre is approachable and welcoming as well as educational and informative.

The heritage centre offers a variety of roles and activities to best suit your volunteering interests. Many of our volunteers have enjoyed training up to become tour-guides, but this is not compulsory. If you aren't interested in tour-guiding, you might prefer providing a warm-welcome more generally to visitors at the front-desk. Many volunteers prefer to assist with our education and activities programme, providing fun shipping themed art and learning activities for all ages. We also offer opportunities to get involved with community outreach and engagement at external venues across the city. Alternatively, if you’d rather help behind the scenes, you might like to get involved in our social media, archiving or research activity.

We’re happy to tailor volunteer roles to help you gain experience for C.V building and can help you access experience with a wide range of heritage partnership agencies. We are also open to volunteers proposing and developing their own ideas for activities/ projects.

There’s no minimum time commitment, you tell us how often you’d like to get involved and whether you’d like a regularly scheduled afternoon (e.g. weekly/ fortnightly). The visitor centre is open daily from 1pm-4pm, meaning that volunteers generally come along for these short afternoon stints of 3 hours.
